Geography

LOZE is situated in the north-east of Tarn et Garonne, in the Midi-Pyrénées, within the canton of Caylus.  It has 118 inhabitants in an area covering 1105 hectares (500 of which are within the limits of the military camp).  It is bordered by 5 Communes: Puylagarde, Saint-Projet, Mouillac, Caylus and Lacapelle Livron.

The village of LOZE , situated at an altitude of 321 metres and enjoys a mild climate, between the ruggedness of the Massif Central (cold and wet) and the warmth of Aquitaine (later and milder winters, prolonged sunshine and warm summers).

LOZE is situated on the southern limits of the Causses of the Quercy, precisely at the junction between the Causse of Limogne and an area of heavy clay soil, separated by the deep valley of the Bonnette River.

The name LOZE may have several origins.  It could be from Gascony, from the ancient provençal LAUZA, a stone slab 5 – 6 centimetres in thickness, which once covered the roofs.  But it could equally be of Occitane origin, from the word Losa: mud and silt, referring to the nature of the soil in the valley of the Bonnette.
